Three Decades of Coastal Dynamics of Hatiya Island, Bangladesh

Hatiya Island is located on the delta of 2 major rivers in South Asia: The Ganges and The Brahmaputra. Its morphology is affected by the dynamics of the climate: from the sedimentations from both rivers to the abrasion and the rising sea level. Knowing its dynamics, may lead us to better understand the dominant natural force in the area at any given time.

Several Landsat-8, Landsat-7, and Landsat-5 were analyzed for this study. Calculation of MNDWI (Modified Normalized Difference Water Index) on each Landsat images from Green Bands and SWIR Bands was done to differentiate waterbody and land.

Palangkaraya Fire Hazard Risk during 2015 Haze Crisis

Due to the El Niño phenomenon, 2015 was one of the most driest year in Indonesia. It also led to the most severe wildfire and haze crisis in recent years. The crisis started at late June and reached its peak on late October. It ended only because of the wet moonson season which started on early to mid November.

Landsat-8 image captured on late October (at the peak of the crisis) around Palangkaraya was choosen as the raw data for this study. Land use data and the extent of protected area downloaded from Geospasial untuk Negeri were also being used. We classified the choosen Landsat-8 image by supervised classification method on ArcGIS to detect active fire hotspot. The result then analyzed with other geospatial data to evaluate fire hazard risk around Palangkaraya during 2015 Fire and Haze Crisis.
